home decor 101

I have people ask me ALL the time to help them “design” their spaces.  People want to pay me GOOD money to outfit their homes with cool things that work together.   That intimidates the shit outta me.

Would I have a blast shopping with someone elses money?   Yes!!!   But would I worry every step of the way if they’d fall in love with their new room?    You betcha !

I don’t know much about feng shui, fine arts, genres of design, or what colors are hot in each season.   I do know that cozy, warm, and high functioning spaces are my jam.

I grew up in a modest and small home, with a mom that was always painting, wallpapering, or rearranging our home.   I LOVED it.   It was exhilarating to me to come home from school and have a room entirely different.   Same stuff, different way of putting it together= awesome!

So what’s my “style?”

I’m a mix of maximalism that knows where to quit, and minimalism that presses the boundaries.   I like to be sure there’s enough treasure in each space for good conversation.    A basket of rocks, an edgey painting with some hidden meaning, something that’s been passed down from a generation before us….   There has to be interesting things like this in every nook and cranny. These things don’t have to be in your face kinds of things.  I prefer them to be more like a treasure hunt through the space.

As far as paint colors go….  I never overthink it.

It’s only paint.

Tonesterpaints.com has been my go to paint store as of late.  I’ve been in a dark and moody era lately with walls. I’m lucky to have BIG windows throughout my entire home, so the dark walls never take on a cave-like feel.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good bright white space (like at girl Friday…my home away from home)

It’s amazing to have a home and a work place that I get to decorate.   If something doesn’t work in one location, it usually will in the other !

As for art ….   I always try to support local artists when possible.   When I need an economical piece of art I generally turn to sites like society6.com or iamfy.co.   Be sure you have plenty of time to search through all the fun prints!   There’s something for everyone.

It’s ultimately all about the vibe.   How you feel when you walk into a space.  I generally try to tap into that feeling before I begin thinking about how to decorate the space.

Is it a work space …. Let’s NOT do too much on the walls.   You’re gonna need to concentrate ….  And be inspired.

Is it a space to chill?   Let’s get ALL the comfy cozy things.

Will you be entertaining in the space?   It’s a must to have conversations starters.

Do you yourself need to get out of a funk?   Maybe it’s time to brighten and lighten your space.
